mary magdalene

Daily writing prompt
If you could meet a historical figure, who would it be and why?

I know a lot of religious people will say Jesus. I on the other hand would love to meet Mary Magdalene. Reduced to a few lines in the Bible, I would love to talk with her. To take in a woman’s perspective of the events following Jesus. I have read the bible many times, I can see how it is written with man in mind. How customs at its time highly favor men and depict women as subservient aids whose purpose is to serve men. For a while, I turned against the very book that led my life from youth.

As I’ve grown older, I realize now that in thousands of years, nothing has changed. Women are still undermined and their great qualities are diminished to what they can do for men. We are treated as objects that belong to the gaze and capture of other men. This is not to make men the enemy, one would be incorrect to blame men and their genetics.. more so is the environment that they are indoctrinated in that make men the way they are. When I see my son, a teenager, I think about how he’s not an enemy, however how I raise him and who influences him can turn him into something that might one day be a threat to women. It is not merely men’s natural instinct to position himself as the leader. It is society and its long history of male dominion.

I think of Mary Magdalene, her heinous depiction in the bible of being possessed by seven demons, the rumor that depicted her as a prostitute, her role diminished to nothing. I wonder about her character, her wisdom and her path. Gnostic Gospel credits her with deep understanding, as well as facing criticism by the other apostles. Many doubt its origin, but the behavior within its passages tells of a tale as old as time. What beauty the bible would hold if it wasn’t void of femininity.
