If I could live anywhere in the world, it would be a mountain top. Away from society. I know they say living within a community is best, but sometimes I wish I was out in nature. Not tied down to bills, work and what we now call life in a modern society. It would of course have to been self-sustainable. A garden plot with protein filled plants to live off. A nearby spring to travel to in order to collect and cherish water from the land. I would climb down when I need connection to others. Along the way I would think and self-reflect on how I could be present.
In today’s world we live close to others more than we’ve ever have before. But there is a disconnect, we pass by and perhaps give a simple smile or wave to a neighbor. Gone are the days where we had to work together to build up our communities. We now exchange cooperation and community for tax dollars to improve on concrete jungles. We have become so accustomed to modern life that we spend our waking moments watching reels in order to catch glimpses of the world outside our small bubbles. We watch series that depict connection while abandoning our own. Too tired to socialize when demanding jobs take away our time as we grind to support the small plot of land we either own or rent.
Living off-grid, we can finally stop the distractions. We can go back to being animals of this earth. I know it sounds wild. I myself as a small child dreamed of living in a loft in the city, surrounded by the bustling sounds of a city alive around me. But what is there now? Overstressed drivers trying to make it back home, screens illuminating faces bowed down to devices, and the presence of poverty and addiction afflicting those who couldn’t sustain themselves any longer.
Perhaps one day, there will be a reset in society. We will look forward to our neighbors, we will come together once more. Living atop a mountain seems isolating but truly we are all isolating ourselves now even as we sit next to each other everyday.
